How Much Internet Speed Do You Need for IPTV?

Written by StreamPlay4K Support Team4 min read

“How fast does my internet need to be?” is one of the first questions people ask us, and the honest answer has two parts: a rough figure per screen, and a reason why the figure on your broadband bill is rarely what decides it.

The rough figures

As a guide, around 15 Mbps is comfortable for one HD stream, and 25 Mbps or more for one 4K stream. Those are per screen that is watching at the same time, so the sum is what counts:

Watching at once Comfortable for
One TV in HD around 15 Mbps
One TV in 4K 25 Mbps or more
Two TVs in HD around 30 Mbps
One 4K TV and two HD screens 55 Mbps or more

Everything else on your network shares the same line: someone on a video call, a game downloading an update, phones backing up photos. The figures above are what IPTV wants on top of that.

There is no single number that fits every home, because how much a stream uses depends on the channel, the picture quality it is broadcast in and the device decoding it. Treat the table as a starting point, not a rule.

Why speed is rarely the real problem

Most homes in Europe and North America have far more than 25 Mbps coming into the house. When live TV stutters, the bottleneck is usually somewhere between the router and the TV:

  • Wi-Fi through walls. Every wall and floor between the router and the TV cuts the speed that actually reaches it. A 300 Mbps plan can arrive at the TV as 10.
  • The 2.4 GHz band. It reaches further but is slower and crowded with every neighbour’s network. If your router offers a 5 GHz network, connect the TV to that.
  • The back of the TV. A stick plugged straight into the TV sits behind a metal panel. The short HDMI extender in the box moves it into the open.
  • The evening. Between about 7pm and 11pm the whole street is streaming, and many connections slow down. That is the hour to test, not the afternoon.

This is why we say a steady connection beats a fast one: live TV needs the speed to stay up for the whole match, not to peak for a few seconds.

How to test the connection that matters

The speed test on your phone, standing next to the router, tells you about your phone next to the router. What matters is the device you watch on, where it actually sits:

  1. Open a speed test on the TV, stick or box itself. On a Fire TV Stick, the Downloader app has a built-in browser that can open a speed-test website, and most smart TVs have a browser too.
  2. Run it in the evening, when you normally watch.
  3. Run it twice: once on Wi-Fi as it is now, and once with the stick moved, the 5 GHz network selected or a cable connected, to see which change helps.

If the number at the TV is comfortably above the figures in the table, speed is not your problem. Why your stream buffers goes through the other causes in order.

A cable beats everything

If the router is anywhere near the TV, a network cable is the single biggest improvement you can make. Smart TVs and most boxes have a network port; Fire TV Sticks take a small Ethernet adapter on their power cable. A wired TV is also one less device fighting over the Wi-Fi, which helps every phone and laptop in the house.

What about 4K?

4K wants more headroom, and it also needs the whole chain: a channel broadcast in 4K, a 4K-capable device, a 4K TV and the connection to carry it. Most live channels are in HD; 4K matters most for films, series and the channels broadcast in 4K. If 4K stutters and HD does not, the connection to the TV is the usual cause. Choosing a Firestick for IPTV covers the device side.

Mobile data and holiday homes

Your login works on any internet connection, including mobile broadband at a cottage or holiday home. On a slower or shared connection, choose an HD channel rather than 4K and the picture stays smooth. Keep an eye on data limits: video uses a lot of it, and live TV left running uses it all evening.

Try it on your own line

The best test of all is your own connection, in the evening, on the TV you will use. Ask for the free trial of up to 24 hours and watch a live match on it. If something is not right, message us on WhatsApp with the result of a speed test from the TV and we will help you find the cause.

  • Internet speed
  • Wi-Fi
  • 4K
